Constituency : Blackburn 1847-65
James was a Congregationalist cotton merchant and Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire.
He was a public benefactor and financed the founding of Blackburn Infirmary.
In September 1862 he was attacked in the street in London and nearly garroted. This inspired a similar episode in Trollope's
Phineas Finn.
He died in 1890 aged 85.
