Wentworth was the son of a mine and estates owner in Northumberland. He was educated at Harrow and Cambridge.His first marriage was to the daughter of Lord Clanricarde.
Wentworth also had railway interests.
He may not have stood in 1885 following the abolition of his seat but he came back for Tyneside in 1886 evicting the Liberal Unionist defector Albert Grey.
Wentworth was raised to the peerage as Baron Allendale in 1906 some years after stepping down as an MP. He died the following year aged 78.
