Constituency : North Durham 1847-68
Robert came from a long-established parliamentary family in the area and was the grandson of the "Bobby Shafto" ( also an MP ) celebrated in a folk song. Robert was rumoured to have spent £100,000 ( surely an exaggeration ) on trying to get elected for Durham County in 1832
Despite such commitment he never actually spoke in Parliament once elected.
Robert died in 1888 aged 92.
