2173 Alasdair McKenzie
Constituency : Ross and Cromarty 1964-70
Alasdair's victory in Ross and Cromarty was all the sweeter for coming at the expense of the National Liberal John McLeod. He won by 1407 votes in a three-cornered contest.
Alasdair was educated at Broadford Junior School on Skye. He became a sheep farmer and was active in the NFU. He was a Ross-shire county councillor for twenty years then a Crofters's Commissioner for five. He was a Gaelic speaker and 61 at the time of his election.
Alasdair became the Liberal spokesman on agriculture and telecommunications. He was opposed to joining the E.E.C. and supported the re-introduction of capital punishment in certain circumstances.
Alasdair increased his majority slightly in 1966 but was defeated by the Tories who came from third place in a four-cornered contest.
He died later that year aged 67.
