2171 Emlyn Hooson
Constituency : Montgomeryshire 1962-79
Emlyn took over at Montgomeryshire after the death of Clement Davies. He more than trebled Davies's last majority in a four-cornered contest.
Emlyn was born in Denbighshire. He was educated at Denbigh Grammar School and University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. He became a barrister and quickly achieved eminence. He contested Conwy in 1950 and 1951, coming third on both occasions and losing nearly half his previous vote in the latter. He became chairman of the Liberal Party of Wales in 1955 and oversaw its merger with the North and South Wales Liberal Federations. Emlyn was also a farmer.
Not long after becoming an MP, Emlyn had the thankless task of defending Ian Brady. It's unthinkable that a serving politician would accept such a brief today.
Emlyn lost out to Jeremy Thorpe in the contest to succeed Jo Grimond. The recent TV series A Very British Scandal portrayed him unsympathetically as encouraging Norman Scott through resentment at his defeat. Both Liberal and Tory successors in Montgomeryshire protested that this was unfair.
Emlyn was a supporter of Welsh devolution and introduced a Government of Wales Bill in 1967. He was initially Eurosceptic but came round to the project later in life. He was a strong opponent of capital punishment and the Vietnam War.
Emlyn unexpectedly lost his seat to the Tories in 1979, apparently because the local association were preoccupied with organising a party rather than campaigning.
Emlyn was made a peer as Lord Hooson. Margaret Thatcher vetoed his appointment as BBC chair so as not to give the Liberal party any credibility. He became a member of the ITV Advisory Council instead. He worked on mental health ,police reform, drug trafficking and international relations in the Lords. He also held a number of legal appointments until his retirement in 1991 He was also heavily involved with the Laura Ashley company and the Severn River Crossing Co.
Emlyn was noted for his frankness.
He died in 2012 aged 86.
