2175 Peter Bessell
Constituency : Bodmin 1964-70
Peter took Bodmin from the Tories at the second attempt with a majority of over 3,000.
Peter was educated at Lynwyd School in Bath. He was a member of the Mebyon Kernow party as well as the Liberals. He was a Congregationalist lay preacher. He stood for Torquay in 1955 twice as there was a by-election that year. Both times he came third.
Despite his background Peter was something of a disreputable character whose interest in sex and money seemed to trump his politics. Shortly after being elected, he was sounding out both Labour and the Tories for inducements to defect. Nevertheless he was a close friend and confidante of Jeremy Thorpe and undertook the task of keeping Norman Scott quiet and covering for Thorpe's indiscretions. He also diverted donations into his own pocket.
Peter's last parliamentary contribution was a question about Bobby Moore's travails in Columbia.
However, Peter's business dealings were equally shady and he felt obliged to stand down in 1970 and move to America. He set up a brokerage firm in New York but this too ran into trouble by 1974 and he relocated to California to escape his creditors.
When police investigated Thorpe, there was a clear money trail to Peter though not in respect of hiring Andrew Newton. He agreed to a deal to testify against Thorpe in return for immunity. Peter returned to Britain, with newly-dyed hair for the trial where he claimed Thorpe had been discussing ways of disposing of Scott with him back in the sixties. His credibility was severely dented when it was revealed he stood to gain a substantial sum from The Sunday Telegraph if Thorpe was convicted. The judge described him as " a humbug". Much of the recent drama A Very English Scandal was based on Peter's account of events.
Peter returned to California where he had a successful holiday rental business. He campaigned against coastal erosion.
Peter died of emphysema caused by heavy smoking in 1985 aged 64. Since the broadcast of A Very English Scandal, his son has been noisy in the press, trying to salvage his father's reputation.
