299 John Bonham Carter
Constituency : Winchester 1847-74
John was the son of the brewer and former Portsmouth MP of the same name. He was first cousin to Florence Nightingale. He was educated at Cambridge. He was a member of the Royal Photographic Society.
John was briefly a whip for Russell in 1866 but did not acquire office under Gladstone after his opposition to disestablishing the Irish Church. In 1872 he succeeded John Dodson as Chairman of Ways and Means. He was defeated in 1874.
He died in 1884 aged 67.
