296 Thomas Alcock
Constituency : Newton 1826-30, Ludlow 1839-40, East Surrey 1847-65
Thomas was a wealthy Londoner educated at Harrow who served briefly in the Dragoon Guards. He travelled in the Near East in 1829-30 and published a book about his travels. He started out as MP for the rotten borough of Newton then had a nine year spell out of Parliament. He stood unsuccessfully at Ludlow in 1837. He got in in 1839 but was unseated on petition. He tried for East Surrey in 1841 but had to wait until 1847 to return to the Commons. In 1845 he published a pamphlet on the preservation of commons.
Thomas was a philanthropist who spent lavishly on churches and schools in Surrey and Lincolnshire. He supported franchise reform.
He died in 1866 aged 65.
