281 George Harcourt
Constituency : Lichfield 1806-31, Oxfordshire 1831-5, 1835-57 ( Conservative) , 1857-61
George was the Father of the House in 1859 and had been since 1850. He was the son of a clergyman who eventually became Archbishop of York and started out as a Whig for Lichfield in 1806 under the patronage of his uncle the marquess of Stafford.. He switched to Oxfordshire in 1831 after making a deal with his potential opponent in 1830 not to stand there again. by 1835 was a Tory. By 1857 he had returned to the fold.
George's nephew said of him "he had not sufficient energy to make much mark in Parliament though his abilities were considered above average".
He died in 1861 after a fall on Dover pier aged 73.
