283 Henry Seymour
Constituency : Poole 1850-68
Henry was a scion of the illustrious Seymours of Somerset. He was ducated at Eton and Oxford. He travelled widely before entering Parliament; he climbed Mount Ararat in 1846 and wrote travel books on Egypt, Central Asia and Russia. He also collected Old Masters. Palmerston appointed him Joint Secretary to the Board of Control and he held that position throughout the first Palmerston ministry.
Henry was a moderate Liberal who took Disraeli's Reform Bill on its merits. He was vigorously opposed to the Tichborne Claimant as his sister had married into the Tichborne family.
Henry was elected to the London School Board in 1876 but died the following year aged 57.
