297 John Briscoe
Constituency : Surrey 1830-2, East Surrey 1832-5, Westbury 1837-41, West Surrey 1857-70
John was a wealthy merchant's son and landowner from London who studied at Oxford. He trained as a barrister but never practised. He first entered Parliament for Surrey in 1830 declaring he was not a Whig but supported retrenchment and reform but was defeated in 1835. He squeezed in at Westbury by two votes in 1837 but did not contest the seat in 1841. In 1857 he returned for West Surrey on Palmerston's coat -tails.
John campaigned for the abolition of the treadmill in prisons.
He died in 1870 aged 79.
