294 Brodie Willcox
Constituency : Southampton 1847-62
Brodie was a Shetlander of modest origins who became a shipbroker. He established the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company ( P & O ) which eventually came to own the world's largest fleet of steamships largely through backing the right sides in the Iberian Wars.. He entered Parliament in 1847.
Brodie was known as a very dour man who rarely spoke in the Commons.
He died in an accident near Portsmouth in 1862. He was 76 years old.
