280 James Langston
Constituency : New Woodstock 1820-6, Oxford 1826-34, 1841-63
James was the son of an Oxfordshire landowner and banker. He was educated at Eton and Oxford. He entered Parliament in an opportunistic challenge to Lord Marlborough's interest at Woodstock in 1820. Marlborough got his revenge in 1826 when his son and a relative pushed James into third place in an election dominated by anti-Catholicism. He was invited to contest Oxford where he topped the poll. He stood down in 1834 and did not stand again until 1841. He was a promoter of local railways and influenced the routes to his advantage.
Throughout his career James was a quiet, moderate Liberal respected by both sides.
He died in 1863 aged 66.
