Sam joined the Liberal Democrats in September 2019 following the removal of the party whip from he and a number of other Conservatives who voted to stop Boris Johnson's "No Deal" brinkmanship over Brexit. He was unveiled as the latest defection at the Liberal Democrat Conference.
Sam was born in Beaconsfield and educated partly in the UK And partly in his mother's native Ghana, He went to Oxford where he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1997. He started working for Goldman Sachs as an investment banker then set up his own training company which went into administration in 2007. Following failure in the Gosport primary,in 2009 he went on David Cameron's A-list of prospective candidates and was selected for East Surrey. He held junior ministerial offices under Cameron and Theresa May but resigned over the latter's Brexit policy. He toyed with the idea of standing for the Conservative leadership but decided against it.
Sam stood for the Liberal Democrats in Kensington. He came third but improved their vote share by nearly 10%.
After the election he became a director of Oxford University Innovation and then rejoined Goldman Sachs as a non-executive director.
