James  took  over  at  Kilmarnock  following  the  retirement  of  Edward  Pleydell-Bouverie.

James  was  a  barrister  who  built  a  home  for  himself  in  Sussex

James  didn't  stand  again  in  1880.

He  died  in  1905  aged  85.
