2207 Edward Lyons

Constituency : Bradford  West 1966-74, Bradford  West 1974-81 ( Labour ), 1981-3 ( SDP ) 

Edward  was  the  next  defector  from  Labour  and  the  last  to  join  before  the  official  launch. He  said"The  label  on  the  bottle  still  says "Labour  Party" but  the  contents  of  the  bottle  have  changed  and  for  the  worse."

Edward  was  born  in  Glasgow  but  the  family  moved  to  Leeds  when  he  was  young. His  father  was  a  Jewish  tailor. He  was  educated  at  Roundhay  School and  Leeds  University. He  worked  as  a  Russian  interpreter  in  occupied  Germany  just  after  the  war. He  then  became  a  barrister. He  contested  hopeless  Harrogate  in  1964  then  was  elected  in  Bradford  East  two  years  later. In  1979  he  bucked  the  trend  an  increased  his  vote, thought  to  be  a  response  to  Margaret  Thatcher's  "swamped"  remark  aggravating  the  Asian  community although  he  himself  had  called  for  curbs  on  immigration  in  1968.

In  Parliament,  Edward   was  a  quiet  backbench  MP  who  intervened  on  legal  and  Home  Office  questions  and  was  a  follower  of  Dennis  Healey.  In  his  maiden  speech  in  1966  during  the  debate  on  the  Abortion  Bill  he  disclosed  that  his  wife  had  had  an  illegal  termination.He  became  a  target  for  deselection  by  militants  in  his  local  party. He  was  a  diligent  constituency  MP  which  helped  him  survive. He  was  very  pro-Europe and  supported  joining  the  E.E.C.  in  1971.

Edward  became  legal  and  home  affairs  spokesman  for  the  SDP  and  sat  on  the  national  committee. He  chaired  a  session  of  the  SDP's  rolling  conference  when  it  came  to  Bradford. 

Edward  came  third  in  1983.  He  stood  for  the  European  Parliament  the  following  year. He  went  back  to  legal  work. He   stayed  with  the  continuing  SDP  up  to  its  demise  in  1990  and  rejoined  Labour  in  1994  partly  because  Tony  Blair's  political  secretary  was  his  daughter-in-law..

After  retiring  Edward  returned  to  Leeds  University  at  77  for  a  degree  in  European  Studies.

He  died  in  2010  aged  83 after  a  long  batttle  with  myelofibrosis..
