105 Henry Pease
Constituency : South Durham 1857-65
Henry was a member of the foremost political dynasty in the North East, the Peases who had interests in railways, coal mining, wool , quarrying and banking. They were devout Quakers which influenced their politics. Henry himself was a director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and founded the new resort of Saltburn-by-the-Sea . He was a member and one time President of the Peace Society and in 1854 went on a mission to Tsar Nicholas in a vain attempt to forestall the Crimean War. He also went to America in 1856 and France in 1867.
While in Parliament Henry supported an extension of the franchise, restrictons on liquor sales , the abolition of flogging in the army and the repeal of the paper duty and he defended the railway companies against accusations that they were unconcerned about passenger safety.
Henry gave way to his cousin Joseph in 1865.
He died in 1881 aged 74.
