George took over at Walsall following the death of Joseph Leckie. He had a comfortable victory over Labour.
George was the son of a barrister. He was educated at Charterhouse and Oxford. He became a barrister himself but gravitated towards finance in the City. He was planning to stand for Eskdale but was unenthusiastic about Lloyd George's land proposals.. He joined up in World War One and served in France and Russia, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel and winning the Military Cross. George's financial expertise led him to advising the League of Nations and then the post of Financial Secretary to the Government of Sudan. In 1928 he became finance minister to the council of India and in 1934 was injured in a bomb attack on the Central Legislative Assembly.
George's maiden speech called for full use of the voluntary system in preparation for war.
During the Second World War, George worked with the Minister of Aircraft Production, Stafford Cripps. In 1941 he called for the Indian Congress to send a representative to see how Britain was withstanding the blitz.
George was defeated in a straight fight with Labour in 1945.
George held a number of public appointments following his defeat. In 1962 he became honorary treasurer of Voluntary Service Overseas.
George wrote a huge volume called India and Democracy.
He died in 1982 aged 101.
