2141 Alec Beechman
Constituency : St Ives 1937-50 ( Liberal National )
Alec succeeded Walter Runciman , who had been elevated to the peerage, at St Ives. Runciman had been unopposed in the last two elections but Alec faced a fierce challenge from Isaac Foot and squeaked home by just 210 votes.
Alec was educated at Westminster School and Oxford. Alec served in World War One reaching the rank of captain and survived nine separate wounds at Passchendale. He won the Military Cross. In the later stages he was an instructor training officer cadets. He became a barrister. He was due to contest Oldham in 1931 but withdrew in favour of the Tories.
Alec had a junior ministerial career from 1940 to 1945. He was also chief whip for the Liberal Nationals from 1942 to 1945.
Alec stood down in 1950. He later served on St Ives town council.
He died in 1965 aged 69.
