Constituency : Roxburgh and Berwickshire 1983-2005
David Steel's position in his own seat was secure enough for him to give a helping hand to Archy , his former personal aide, in the neighbouring constituency.Archy defeated Iain Sproat who had moved to this new seat believing it safer than his own ( which the Tories held ).
Archy was educated at Cranhill School, Glasgow and Heriot-Watt University. He became a solicitor and then personal aide to David Steel.
Archy's first act as an MP was the illegal one of persuading the local postman to give him David Steel's resignation letter. He became social services spokesman. He was one of the architects of the defence rebellion in 1986.
Paddy Ashdown made him chief whip in 1992. He successfully piloted two private member's bills
Although the frail-looking Archy had a low public profile, he was respected across the house for his unpartisan approach and after the 1997 election he became chair of the select committee on work and pensions. He has been invited to address conferences on welfare to work in the USA. He opposed the ban on fox-hunting.
Archy was knighted in 2003 and stood down in 2005 partly due to boundary changes. He became Baron Kirkwood.
Archy is a keen electric guitarist.
He is now 72.
