1532 Andrew Torrance




Constituency : Glasgow  Central  1906-09

Andrew  took  Glasgow  Central  from  the  Tories.

Andrew  was  educated  at  Cumnock  Parish  School. He  was  apprenticed  to  a  firm  of  muslin  manufacturers in  Glasgow  but  moved  to  London  two  years  later  and  eventually  became  a  partner  in  a  firm. He  became  a  Progressive  councillor  in  London  and  was  chairman  of  the  County  Council  in  1901-02.  He  stood  for  Islington  East  ( his  council  seat )  in  1900  but  lost  quite  heavily . He  then  switched  to  Islington  Borough  Council  and  was  Mayor  in  1903-05.

Andrew  was  knighted  in  1906.

Andrew  made  few  contributions  in  the  Commons  during  his  tenure.

He  died  in  1909  aged  63.
