Robert  took  over  from  Roger  Aytoun  at  Kirkcaldy .

Robert  was  educated  at  Oxford  and  became  a  barrister.

In  1874  Robert  spoke  up  for  the  system  of  elementary  education  in  Scotland.

He  died  in  1875  aged  43.
