Richard took Sheffield Hallam from the Tories with the biggest swing of the night.
Richard was born in Sheffield and educated at Oundle School and Cambridge. He became a field archaeologist working in Britain, Europe and South America before switching to an IT career in 1991.
Richard became chair of the House of Commons Information Select Committee. In 2004 he accepted the chairmanship of Parthenon 2004, campaigning for the return of the Elgin marbles.
Richard decided to step down in 2005 and acted as campaign manager for Nick Clegg who succeeded him.
Richard returned to the world of I.T. He was Head of Government Affairs for Cisco Systems UK then became Director of Policy in Europe for Facebook in 2009.
Richard became a life peer in 2010.
He is now 53.
