1197 Ralph Neville


Constituency : Liverpool  Exchange  1887 - 1895

Ralph  was  the  victor  in  a  hard-fought  contest  at  Liverpool  Exchange  to  replace  the  deceased  David  Duncan.  He  defeated  George  Goschen , who  was  trying  to   return  to  Parliament  after his  defeat  at  Edinburgh,  by  7  votes.

Ralph  was  a  doctor's  son. He  was  educated  at  Tonbridge  School  and  Cambridge. He  became  a  barrister  and  practised  in  Liverpool.

Ralph  derided  the  government's  Coercion  Bill  in  his  maiden  speech  in  1887.

After  narrowly  retaining  his  seat  in  1892 , Ralph  stood  down  in  1895.

Ralph  became  an  Appeal  Court  judge  in  1906. He  was  involved  in  the  Osborne  case  about  use  of  trade  union  funds.

Ralph  was  a  keen  rower.

He  died  in  1918  aged  70.
