1195 James Rowlands

Constituency : Finsbury  East  1886-95, Dartford  1906-10, 1910-20

James  took  Finsbury  East  from  the  Tories  as  a  Liberal-Labour  candidate.

James  was  a  local  watch-case  maker. He  was  educated  at  the  Working  Mens' College. He  was  Honorary  Secretary  to  the London  Municipal  Reform  League, President  of  the  Gas  Consumer's  Protection  League  and  Secretary  of  the  Leaseholds  Enfranchisement  Association.
He  was  also  active  in  the  Workingman's  Peace  Association.

James  maiden  speech  was  a  protest  against  the  annexation  of  Burma.

James  lectured  on  many  progressive  causes  in  London.

James  supported  William  O  Brien  in  Ireland  by  appearing  on  the  platform  with  him  at  an  illegal  meeting  in  1887.

James  was  defeated  in  1895  but  returned  for  Dartford  in  1906. He lost  the  seat  in  January  1910  but  regained  it in  December.

James  was  interested  in  land  law  reform  and  international  arbitration.

James was  re-elected  as  a  Coalition  Liberal  in  1918.

He  died  in  1920  aged  68.

That  concludes  our  look  at  the  new  Liberals  of  1886. We  now  look  at  the  by-election  victors  of  the  1886-92  Parliament.
