221 Henry Schneider
Constituency : Norwich 1857-9, Lancaster 1865-6
Henry was a colourful character seemingly sitting for the wrong constituency. He was a speculator in metals who made his fortune in Furness, Lancashire. He was largely responsible for the development of Barrow-in-Furness where he part-owned an enormous steelworks. He had a house on the shore of Windermere.
Despite these roots Henry was elected for Norwich in 1857. He was re-elected in 1859 but the result was overturned on petition and he did not stand in the re-run contest.
Henry re-emerged nearer home with his election for Lancaster in an 1865 by-election but controversy followed him and he was disqualified the following year for bribery, the whole constituency being disenfranchised until 1885.
He died in 1887 aged 70.
